As students prepare to return to school, many are getting new clothes and supplies. Eight local young women spent last week getting something even better: new skills. They participated in a Beginner Sewing Class sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Church of Stillwater as part of the Church's mission to expand knowledge and to serve the wider community. Instructor Stacia Smith operates Formal Fantasy bridal shop and is the designer and alterationist for the store. The students, all between eight and fourteen years old, began with very little to no knowledge of sewing. After learning all about sewing machines, they created a fun eight-sided ball the very first day. By the end of the five day class, they each had constructed a piece of clothing. Several chose to make tops, while others made gaucho pants, capris and skirts. These young ladies can now express their creativity in custom clothing. They have a deeper appreciation for the effort needed to make their clothing, plus they have learned a valuable and increasingly rare skill. They also had such a good time they're already planning for the winter break follow-up class. Questions can be directed to Stacia Smith at 780-7720 |
